David did the Acropolis Rally in a Cortina in
1964.
The Alpine was to prove to be a huge disappointment for David
and his Co-Driver Tony Nash. They were leading the Touring Car
category outright until 20 miles from the finish when the engine
cried "enough". his car blew a cylinder head gasket. Had
they been able to make it to the top of the hill, about 5 miles,
they could have coasted to the bottom and won the Rally. If
one looks closely at the press adverts, one can see that there are
strategically placed smudges of mud on the number plate and the door
signs as all the adverts had already been produced showing David
and Tony as the winners. David was driving no.28 Reg no.
892 DOO and Vic Elford, who went on to win, was driving no.29
Reg no. 893 DOO.
